Frequently asked questions

What is the Speaking exam like?

You take it on a computer. It has 16 questions in four parts: a video, one picture, two pictures and three pictures. You may play a question as often as you like. You have up to a minute for each answer. You may listen back to your answer and record it again. The exam takes 35 minutes.

Can I read the question along on the exam?

In parts 2, 3 and 4 (the pictures), yes: everything you hear is on the screen too, the introduction, the question and the instruction. In part 1 (the video), no: there you have to watch and listen.

Does it work the same here?

Yes. You may play the question as often as you like, you have up to a minute for each answer, and you may listen back and record again. With the pictures the question is on the screen too. In part 1 the exam shows a video of a person talking to the camera and asking you a question. Here the screen of that video is blank and you hear only its sound. For practice that makes no difference: you hear exactly the same, and there too the question is not on the screen.

Do my pronunciation and grammar count?

Yes. We mark your answer here as the exam does: on six aspects, 12 points an answer together. What matters most is whether your answer fits the question and its second part ("Vertel ook ..."). Then your words, your grammar, how fluently you speak, how your sentences connect and your pronunciation count. An accent costs no points. If your answer does not fit the question, the other aspects score 0 too.

What do I need to practise here?

A phone or computer with a microphone, and a quiet place.
